Corazon Ministries, Inc.

As part of the outreach mission of Travis Park United Methodist Church, Corazon Ministries, Inc. (C.M.I.) has been in operation since 1999.  The largest organization currently serving the homeless population in our area, Haven for Hope, was created in part because we were one of the most aggressive advocates for the homeless in San Antonio.  Through serving meals, providing primary health care, vision services, clothing, personal hygiene products and warm showers, we demonstrate our commitment to lifting others toward self-actualization and a positive and rewarding spiritual life.

Many in our community think that Haven for Hope has resolved all the problems for people who are homeless.  As a partner with Haven for Hope, we know this is not the case. The economy has been devastating for so many people, including our returning veterans, and the number of people who are homeless or who live life on the margin has increased dramatically since Haven for Hope opened.  CMI addresses the needs of not only those who are homeless but also people who work but are not paid a living wage. There is much to be done by all of us who wish to reach out to those in need.

Corazon Ministries has no paid staff although we do contract for the services of one pastor at Travis Park UMC to provide pastoral support. Other than that, we are all volunteers who are very efficient and frugal with our funds. We provide all the manpower behind the services provided but we do need funds for the material items such as the following (approximate costs in parenthesis):

  • Hot breakfasts consisting of egg casserole, pancakes, fruit and coffee for 250 to 350 men, women and children every Sunday morning.
  •  Wednesday evening prayer and recovery circle, then dinner including soul food.
  • Lunch for 45-65 people every Thursday and Friday for those who attend a Bible study.
  • Our cost to provide these meals is less than $1.00 per plate in part through purchases we make at the San Antonio Food Bank as well as some food donations from local merchants.
  • Hot showers on Sunday mornings with new underwear ($1.00 each) and socks ($0.75 pair)
  • Personal hygiene products for men and women ($0.75 each)
  • Reading glasses ($0.60 each)
  • Overhead costs for utilities such as hot water for the kitchen and showers, air conditioning and for janitorial services

Your contributions give us the opportunity to continue helping people who are in need and we are sincerely grateful for your support of Corazon.
